Unlucky

And so we have come to the end of Unlucky Young Men and gosh, let me tell you... this became such a chore for us towards the endπŸ˜… I really hope there's someone out there that will one day read this manga and think "That was such a great series" because for us... it... well... yeah. I will maintain that the first volume was actually quite strong but it just crashed in the second volume, and it crashed hard. Overall sentiment in the group was "ewwie" for most of (or in suchtla's case, all of) the second volume. Although it was co-plotted, I put most of the blame on Eiji Otsuka because he also wrote that turd MPD Psycho, I read that one probably more than a decade ago and I didn't even read everything that was scanlated at the time, I dropped it at around 40 chapters in or so, it had a very poor and surface level handle on the multiple personality disorder presented in the series.

Kamui Fujiwara is absolutely fantastic throughout the entire series though and I feel bad about not talking about his work more but his layouts are pretty fucking incredible. It's a shame the manga wasn't better, especially since some of the character were based on some really cool fucking people. The worst sin in terms of the writing has got to be the female characters that are just simply badly written. And I think most of the attempts at being clever fell flat, Eiji Otsuka is no Tolstoy and while Yoko's words in chapter 18 (on the 4th page/058) are great, that chapter takes a turn for the worst and is overall pretty shitty and her character is just... so bad from that moment forward (ironically, the two Yoko's conversation at the end of that chapter is actually pretty okay)

But I don't wanna rag on it too much, I didn't hate it even though I didn't find the last chapter satisfying (last several pages were very good though) but even so I thought there were sill some good moments like the N scenes from chapter 20 or those last several pages of chapter 26 with T and Yoko (mostly because of Fujiwara but the pages were well written too).

There's a spin off one volume manga that you should know what it's about by now. Absolutely zero interest in doing that from us and if someone were to join with the intention of doing it we'd just throw a few hundred other suggestion their way instead. Go read Mishima's novels and then watch Mishima A Life In Four Chapters, I'll stake my life on the fact that that movie is far better than this 1 volume spin off manga that I have not read. He was such a fascinating person that it's hard to believe his life was real... maybe it wasn't and we're just living in his dream, but his story is grander than fiction and his books all build up and help contextualize his life and its trajectory, he is poetry in human form. And his writing is simply beautiful. There's a lot content about him and based on him out there, just this year there was some lost footage recovered of a famous debate between him and students at Tokyo University.

Oh well, this series is (in my opinion) the weakest we've worked on but I'm glad we were able to finish it despite the fact that, like I said, we weren't really feeling it anymore. And I really hope someone out there, even if it's just one person, end up really liking this.

Tokyo Girls Bravo on the other hand continues to be lovely. Funny and sad, tragic and at times very uplifting. Kyoko Okazaki does a lot in a limited number of pages, chapters never feel empty.

I'll give you anything, everything if you want things

I've got a bike, you can ride it if you like
It's got a basket, a bell that rings
And things to make it look good

The beautiful simplicity manages to encompass that feeling of youth and innocence, so much feeling in these little menial joys we partook in but we never gave them a though and yet when it drives off the lane
I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it
It's that end of happiness, there's something missing... but it's delivered with that same innocence. Those fleeting moments that you never appreciate at the time, they were beautiful but they were always lacking that certain something.
Yeah, I'm a Syd era person. I strongly believe his solo albums were very strong, especially Madcap Laughs.

But yeah, I love this chapter and those last two pages. Kyoko Okazaki can really capture that feeling of adolescence so well it's... just... it's perfect. (or should I say Just Like Heaven)

Triptych

Finally, after a few delays along the way... here is the most relatable manga I have ever, I could say it's "Literally me: the manga". All joking aside, I do actually agree with a lot of the stuff in it and I would totally do the same, and we also share some common interests...

I have gushed about Jiro Matsumoto in the past so I won't do it again, this little 3 chapter thing he did is mostly just a comedy but it's fuckin' hilarious! He takes some really mundane things and creates some truly funny moments and situations.

Since we did Full Stealth Camouflage Little Matchstick Girl, The final volumes of Joshi Kouhei have come out, I started reading it, I'm 11 chapters in and I really like it a lot so in the off chance you were waiting until it was fully scanlated to read it and it somehow passed you by... well, here's your heads up. Also Jiro Matsumoto could totally beat up your favorite mangaka.

I've also been reading Tokyo Alien Bros, I'm halfway through and I absolutely love it. This is what good slice of life should be, it's so funny and it's pretty sweet too and his art is sooo good, I love looking at all the clutter in the apartments and shit and I love his expressions and he's got such a good sense of pace, I'm planning on watching the movie adaptation after I finish the mango. Keigo Shinzo is such a talented mangaka, one of my favorites of the new generation and every time I mention him I'm like a broken record by mentioning that I was pretty buttmad when the scanlation of Nora of The Weeds was dropped and nobody else picked it up, I was really loving that. Oh and hey, his current series is being scanlated, Hirayasumi, check that out! I only read 4 chapters but I really dig it. For the longest time his only scanlated work was that volcano town one and it was fine and all and I get that some of the things he was going for simply weren't for me but it's just nowhere near as good as Hirayasumi, Nora of The Weeds or Tokyo Alien Bros.

Keep an eye out for Himeanoru, guys. πŸ˜‡

Alright then, here are the goods now. Jiro himself makes some appearances in Dictator and if you've read some of his past works you'll know which one he is.

The saga of the Unlucky Young Men is already in its final act, the art in the last couple of pages of this chapter is so good, the layouts and imagery are top notch stuff.

Unlucky Young Men ch. 26

Oh yeah, we were doing Deathco, remember that? Here's the deal, we are in dire need of another ts. Not only is the current one suffering from some technical difficulties but he would prefer working on something else because while he does like the manga, Kaneko just puts so many sfx on the page that it's a chore to do, so please help us out here so we can finish up this wonderful series.

Bernd County

Another new project. We might be starting too many at once but all in all it's all about the staff and their availability and if we can do this then... why not.

This project has been cooking for a long time, the raws were bought almost an entire year ago, we even have a new translator for it now, R4physics. Specials thanks to Gyoshi for translating the first chapter and helping us make a smooth transition.

Akira Oze is pretty well known in Japan, not a huge name but not obscure either. Also, mandela effect, I actually thought he had one series fully translated in english but I was wrong... the thing that popped in my mind as I was trying to remember which series I was thinking of was the vol1 cover for Hitoshi Iwaaki's Fuuko in the Cafe which, apart from not being by Akira Oze, is also not fully translated (ongoing active scanlation though... I think). Oh well. This manga is based on real life events, the "Sanrizuka Struggle". If you want, there's a real good article on it which you can read now or you can go into this mango blind and read it later or you can read it after you finish reading the manga if you want to avoid spoilers (I'll repost it then). Anywho, here it is.

There are two Oze mango that are being scanlated right now by other groups Natsuko's Sake (Natsuko no Sake) and Ryuu. So check em out if you want some more of his stuff. All three look very different from one another though.

Salted Love

Before the weekly dose of salt, I will remind everyone that Ciguatera vol 1 is coming out this month (next week). They're doing 2-in-1 volumes so this will collect half of the series and the second volume will finish it off.

And now some more torture and the hard life

Tokyo Girls Bravo ch. 3

And a little communism

Unlucky Young Men ch. 19

And now here we are, the last grains of salt... This actually ended up being my second favorite Minoru Furuya work after Himizu. I don't like ranking things in general and I can't really do it for Minoru's mango either, I just know that I liked Himizu best ( and that's cause it's actually among my very favorite, equaled by few, topped by none) and because I finished Saruchinesu a few months ago this is not a gut reaction, I can safely say that it is my favorite manga of his if we were to exclude Himizu. But enough about that, here are the goodies.

Saruchinesu ch. 44

Saltiness Vol. 1

Saltiness Vol. 2

Saltiness Vol. 3

Saltiness Vol. 4

And as for my thoughts, if you care about reading them (after you grabbed the last chapter and read it, of course) well, here it is: I think Saltiness is Minoru Furuya perfecting that formula he started sometime in the mid 00s, he does not skip a beat in this manga and I can't say there's a weak chapter in the entire 44 chapter run, everything builds towards the ending, it's very focused. Looking at his bibliography, I have to say that he is incapable of writing a bad ending, all his manga ends the way it's supposed to, driving home the themes and ideas he sets out to, I know back in the day when Ciguatera was kinda popular a lot of people hated the ending but that was really the perfect ending for that series and Wanitokagegisu has a bit of a fizzled out ending but, again, that's what the story needed, it's fitting. I think it's wrong to look at endings as "sad endings" and "good endings", it's just so... limiting, it's like still being obsessed with black white/white hat, after a certain point you need to evolve past it, look beyond genres, cliches and archetypes, most things have been done already as an idea, it's how you develop and execute that idea that counts, that's what makes it "original", the "idea" itself is nothing, it's just putty waiting to be shaped. I also never liked the "fanfiction way" of inserting your own vision upon someone else's work "here's what I think the ending should've been like", just immerse yourself in the world and start believing that the characters have their own voices... you can't do that with cookie cutter crap, of course, but you owe it to the good creators to at least give them this much.

Speaking of... Saltiness had an uncharacteristically optimistic ending for a Minoru Furuya manga, but it just worked, it was well earned and it was simply the perfect ending for this manga. Seeing numbnuts(Takehiko) go from this ultimate NEET to someone that can trust people, to someone that can joke with people, to someone that helps people... to someone that actually wants to live instead of just kill time on this earth... it's soothing, it's... it's nice. And that little page we added at the end is just the fundamental truth about this manga, every character numbnuts came in contact with saw their lives change for the better: he helped the little one to get out of that panty stealing business and helped him talk and eventually confess to the girl he liked, he helped the mentalist and inspired him to turn his life around, he helped the suicidal Tomoki Tonobe and pulled her from that dark place, and he helped his boss and his nephew, and he helped his sister and the guy from the gas station get together (remember, he was going to return to Tokyo and without him pushing them like that they would've never dated) and of course, he helped Piggy, It's ironic that in chapter 17 he says that "people around me were always happy, I was the exception" because the same was true for numbnuts throughout this manga and I guess they canceled each other out and Piggy went from homeless to a working man... a respectable man. It was a beautiful journey, and seeing him in chapter 41 regaining his "right to die" but simply rejecting it... was just really well done, his sister was set at that point but.. he didn't want to die anymore, he wanted to live... an alien concept for him, but it happened naturally and slowly over the course of the series. I loved how dark it got there near the end in the 4th volume, and I really like that despite how dark it all seemed... sunrise was just a few hours away.

"People are nice" - Takehiko Nakamaru

His journey is a testament to everyone out there that it's never too late, no matter how strained your relationships may be, no matter how depressed you might be, no matter how much of a weird outsider you might be... there's hope, if you try, you can turn your life around. Even this caricaturized weirdo loser can find happiness and so can you. Do not drift through life, the destination is not a prize, just enjoy the journey. Nothing ever ends.

Sorrow of the heart

Judgement. We usually release the last two chapters of something together because often enough, the last chapter ends up just being an epilogue of sorts and it's best to read the last two together. Not the case here, I think ch43 is pretty draining and feels a bit heavy to the point that it's best to catch a breather instead of immediately diving into ch44. Also, last two chapters feature some redraws so it's best if we don't force two chapters out in a week.

The pains of growing up

Today, we bring you another series by a mangaka I'm very passionate about, Kyoko Okazaki. The phrase "voice of a generation" is used often and much like most words and expressions today, the meaning behind them has been lost... but there's really no better way to describe Okazaki, she was a major influence on a ton of people including the likes of Inio Asano, Akane Torikai, Kiriko Nananan or Moyocco Anno, the latter also serving s her assistant and if you read that and thought "Anno..?", well, yeah, she's his wife.

Now, obviously, I'm not saying that if you like one of the people she influenced you'll necessarily like Okazaki, right out the gate there's the art style which... isn't for everyone. I do believe that if you read a bit you'll get used to it to the point that you can't see her stories drawn in any other style, also, some people (especially fellow artists) swear by her style, and cite it as a major influence. And just so you know, her influence crossed over the big blue sea and there are a lot of western artist that cite her as a major influence, a random example would be Michel Fiffe if you've ever herd of him, he's got this Suicide Squad style pastiche comic called COPRA that he self published, I never read it but the fact that he self published it and, if you look it up, it's pretty successful, is an awesome thing! I did read Zegas from him but I didn't care much for it, I'll tell you this though, his art is fan-fucking-tastic, if you're looking for cool action packed stuff, maybe give Copra a shot. Spain has a really good culture when it comes to comics/manga. Me jelly. Anywho, back to her art style... it's loose and it's caricaturized, with chibi-like elements, the line work looks reckless but it all falls into place. Her stories are really good and to use another overused expression that people have been throwing around even for stuff that it doesn't apply to, her characters are three dimensional - they're never pure good or pure bad, there's always more nuance to them than simple shit like that, making a mistake doesn't atomically mean you've learned and learned not to make it, they're often people swept up by the consumerist culture, losing themselves in decadence but more often than not, they're fragile people with wants and desires and fears. In the 80s and 90s, she was published in a large number of different manga and fashion magazines and her stuff spoke to young people as it had a focus on glam, fashion, night life and all that comes with it, music and drugs and sadomasochism and homosexual relationships, prostitution, bullying, death, eating disorders, loneliness, celebrity worship and the unhealthy fascination with "the high life"... Her drawing style is pretty cutesy and that often clashes with the subject matter of the stories to create a wonderful combination... it's also really funny, her humor is on point and the drawings really make it work.

She actually made her debut in a hentai anthology iirc, or it's among her first gigs, either way, she lived fast and didn't stay in one place. She did gain a following from that though which begs the question... why were girls in the early 80s reading a hentai magazine? regardless, Moyocco Anno, Erica Sakurazawa or a new wave japanese singer called Jun Togawa were her "groupies" since then.

But despite all the influences, nobody can really capture what made Okazaki Okazaki, not to throw her under the bus, but Moyoco's In The Clothes Called Fat is a Kyoko Okazaki-esque manga except the characters are pretty two dimensional, it lacks the fashion and music culture that Okazaki has and she's afraid to really throw herself in the dirt, to really show the trashiness and the pain, the patheticness of the characters... even when they are presented at their lowest points, their pain is a lot more self pitying than the pure rock bottom patheticness that Okazaki shows her characters in, which in turn also shows a real sadness in their moments of pure meanness, though that's a fault with a lot of authors in any medium, when the characters are suffering, the author wants you to feel a certain way, and I never liked fiction that told you what to think. The concepts that she uses, like "the cameras that steal away my soul, little by little, with every snap" show her more sophisticated tasted in literature and music that combined with her wild girl life of partying in late night Tokyo clubs, creates a very unique work that's just hard to replicate unless you live that life yourself.

You should still read In The Clothes Called Fat though, it's not bad, just not great/amazing.

In english, only three of her manga are available, all fantastic: River's Edge which is fucking good but I think that if it's your first manga by her it can be a bit hard to get into for the first 2-3 chapters, Pink which was never scanlated but it was licensed by Vertical back when they were awesome (pre-Kodansha), you can find scans of it online though and it is a good entry point in her work, and Helter Skelter - considered her magnum opus, it was scanlated a long time ago and was also licensed by Vertical a bunch of years ago. Bit of a warning, if you want to own them, get them while you still can, if they go out of print you won't see a reprint, I actually thought Helter Skelter was out of print myself but I found it a few months ago and bought it so it sits nicely right alongside my copy of Pink. It would be best if you read River's Edge before Helter Skelter but it is not mandatory.

If you look her up, she was very energetic and full of life, even though she's amazing at capturing the feelings of suburban depression, disillusionment and the horror in that world of party and glam that hides underneath the bright lights.

Tokyo Girls Bravo is the story of a small time girl living in a lonely world... Sakae is moving from Sapporo to Tokyo and is excited to experience all the coolness that the city has to offer. Will it live up to her expectations? Will she fit in? TGB is a bit lighter than her other three manga available in english in that it doesn't have any morbid or overly provocative stuff in it, but it's very much a Kyoko Okazaki manga in terms of characters, presentation, and humor.

Sadly, her story does not have a happy ending, as life usually doesn't... In 1996, after completing Helter Skelter, she was hit by a drunk driver. She ended up in a coma for several months and since then has been wheelchair bound. I never did dig much beyond that, like for example, why did she never continue writing while finding other people to draw her stories, certainly she can't draw anymore because of the nerve damage but she could type up a script, right? thing is... the possibility that she was left with brain damage and has lived like that for 25 years is just something I would prefer not to have confirmed. It's not all tears though, her friends have not abandoned her and when they talk about her, they talk about her in the present and not about "what she was" but they talk about how she's doing now, couple of years ago they even took her to a concert to a band she really liked. Her work has also seen reprints in the last couple of years so she is certainly not forgotten in life and not forgotten in the realm of manga either. She was very prolific as a mangaka and four of her stories have been adapted to live action, Helter Skelter (2012, dir. Mika Ninagawa), River's Edge (2018, dir. Isao Yukisada), both of these are quite good but I recommend reading the manga first because that's the better version; there's also Chiwawa (2019, dir. Ken Ninomiya) this one was never scanlated or licensed so just watch the movie, it's really good; and also Georama Boy Panorama Girl (2020, dir. Natsuki Seta) which I have not watched yet but I plan to, hope it's good. It would've certainly been interesting to read some contemporary Okazaki manga considering the decadence and complete fall that society has seen since her accident. There's also still merch made nowadays based on her manga, like t-shirts and stuff.

I still remember her afterword at the end of Pink, to say so much in so few words... that little bit of text really speaks to me and it just perfectly captures what life is about, when she talks about her sister it's like... she just gets it. She knows what life is, with all the hardship and with all the ugliness, with all the hardship and with all the beautiful bright neon lights, she fully understands what it is.

All work is prostitution.

And believe me, the editing on this thing is incredible because we're using some old ass scans. Our beloved leader would like to make it known these are the worst raws he's had the displeasure of working with so a round of applause for him and radicalkiwi and also because on the typesetting we switch fonts and stuff, as said in the credits pages, that font used of certain words is because they're originally spoken in english and, well... when you translate it in english... it's all in english! but I wanted them to pop out because if spoken by these ja-po-knees people, they'd pop out, and we also kept it for foreign bands and stuff. "Heaven" is a japanese magazine so I decided against using the font because it's not "a foreign object" in the conversation. The speech bubbles are also pretty cramped so it's not an easy ts job at all. I'll be honest, I actually like the end result, the raws might be bad but post editing... these pages look good!

Tokyo Girls Bravo ch. 1

Tokyo Girls Bravo ch. 2

I'll try to add a song for every chapter that I think would fit since Kyoko Okazaki has great taste in music, the trick is that I'll only use song released from 1990 onwards (the manga takes place in the late 80s but it started publication in 1993 so I'll meet them in the middle.) ; They'll capture a moment in the chapter.

Chapter 1

Every Breath You Take would've been good for ch2 but that's from '83 so...

What is life?

And so we reach the end of the first volume. 'nother one to go here. Kind of excited to see what Fujiwara is talking about in the afterword, I wanna see his style for vol2, he was pretty fucking awesome so far.
And

Hacks often use timeskips because they can't do character development. I don't really consider 2 months a time skip considering the nature of serialization and how, for example, a tv series will usually progress in real time so there's always a week long skip between episodes. Minoru Furuya does a good job of not skipping anything important but progressing things around a bit so that it doesn't eat up page space. 40 chapters woo-hoo.

EVOL is a series I'm proofreading with the cool gang over at Dekoboko Scans, I am also proofreading The Last Cruise by Shinichi Sugimura and it's a lot of fun, does some really interesting things with structure and stuff, and we were also doing Sheeply Horned Witch Romi but that got licensed so make sure to buy it because Yoichi Abe is amazing and it would be awesome if we got more of his stuff.

Anway, go grab EVOL it's fucking awesome, and if you have anything bad to say about Atsushi Kaneko, know that I will use this money from this ad and I will track you down and murder you dead!

Hope you see it πŸ˜‡
